Attic Institute: FALL Online: Telling Stories: How to Write Fiction Workshop w Wayne Gregory

September 21, 2021 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm

$215 – $242
Online, N/A, Portland, OR 97207

“Fiction was invented the day Jonah arrived home and told his wife that he was three days late because he had been swallowed by a whale.” — Gabriel García Márquez

As soon as humans could speak, they gathered around the fire to tell stories. We’ve been doing it ever since.  We love to tell stories and to hear them because they have the power to change us. But how to take that story in your head and craft it into a fictional form that will grab and hold your readers? This class will show you!  You will learn about some of the basic elements of fiction (plot, character development, point of view, narration/scene) and you will gain strategies to bring all these elements together into well-crafted writing. Whether you are interested in short fiction or a longer novel, you will walk away with a clear sense of where to go with your fiction and how to move to the next level. Students will be asked to bring to class an idea for a fictional story (short story or longer) or, better yet, a draft they have been working on. Students and the instructor will provide feedback each week so you can flesh out your story with a view toward a more complete draft at the end of the workshop. Register now and get ready to tell your story. | Maximum: 15 writers

NOTE: To protect everyone during the COVID-19 pandemic, we’re offering our workshops via Zoom. All students must first sign up for a free Zoom account. Setting it up is easy. And we can help you with questions, if needed. For each class, you’ll receive a Zoom “invitation,” from the instructor. Click the link…follow the simple directions about the settings for your microphone and in-computer video, and you’re immediately in the “room” for the workshop. For critique workshops, instructors will communicate with students about the process of sharing work. For more generative workshops, students will be writing together while on Zoom.
