The Craft of Fiction: Building Scenes
When we write creatively, we have to craft the words by making intentional choices about words, vocabulary, person, voice, and more. Each choice produces different art. Just like the visual artist thinks carefully about which color she will choose and what kind of brushstroke to make, the creative writer has to make intentional choices about what and how she represents her story on the literary canvas. Stories need not just give readers information, but more importantly, provide them an experience. One of the best ways to do this is to create scenes that move the story forward and also reveal something important about the characters. In this workshop, we will focus on how to create compelling scenes that engage your readers and draw them into the story. We will focus on integrating dialogue, action, interior monologue, sensory description, and narrative into scenes that grab the reader. We will also explore when to create scenes and how to decide when and how to use them. No prior experience with writing workshops is needed and every effort is made to personalize the experience for each writer. The workshop will feature in-class writing, readings during the week, and sharing/group critique in class. | Maximum: 12 writers
