Broadway  Books is thrilled to announce a virtual event for the launch of Jacqueline Winspear‘s memoir This Time Next Year We’ll Be Laughing, to be published by Soho Press on November 10th. The event will take place via Zoom at 5:30 pm (Pacific time) on Wednesday, November 18th.

Jacqueline Winspear is well-known and well-loved for her Maisie Dobbs series, which explores the aftermath of World War I through the character of Maisie, who is very much a woman of her generation–women who claimed independence they were reluctant to relinquish once the war ended. After sixteen novels, Winspear has produced a deeply personal memoir that reveals the hardships and joys of her family history and gives us a clear insight into how the character of Maisie was born.

The book touches on her paternal grandfather’s shellshock, her mother’s evacuation from London during the Blitz, her soft-spoken animal-loving father’s torturous assignment to an explosives team during WWII, her parents’ years living with Romani Gypsies, and Jacqueline’s own childhood working on farms in rural Kent, capturing her ties to the land and her dream of being a writer at its very inception.

An eye-opening and heartfelt portrayal of a post-war England we rarely see, This Time Next Year We’ll Be Laughing tells the story of a childhood in the English countryside, of working class indomitability and family secrets, of artistic inspiration and the price of memory.

The writer Anne Lamott says “Jacqueline Winspear has created a memoir of her English childhood that is every bit as engaging as her Maisie Dobbs novels, just as rich in character and detail, history and humanity. Her writing is lovely, elegant and welcoming.”

New York Times reporter Sarah Maslin Nir joins Winspear in conversation for this event. In 2006, Nir was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Local Reporting. Nir is the author of the recently published book Horse Crazy: The Story of a Woman and a World in Love with an Animal, published by Simon & Schuster. The book explores why so many people are obsessed with horses. Author Susan Orlean says “Lyrical, lovely, and thoroughly engaging, Horse Crazy is that rare book that looks inward and outward. It harnesses Nir’s smart reporting about the world of equine devotion with a reflection on her lifelong love of horses, and the result is wonderful.” Both Winspear and Nir are avid horse riders.

The event will take place at 5:30 on Wednesday, November 18th Pacific Time.
