Choosing Compassion over Fear: Celebrating World Kindness Day

Annie Bloom’s welcomes Marlena Fiol and Sherry Belul for a conversation and readings from their new books. We all have an equal capacity to harm or to heal. Confronted by our current challenges, will we choose to shut down in fear and anger, or will we reach out with kindness and compassion?

Celebrated scholar, speaker, and author Marlena Fiol shares an up close & personal look into one person’s journey from fear and anger to compassion. Her book, Nothing Bad Between Us, reveals her deeply personal story about growing up on a leprosy compound in Paraguay, South America, with a father who was both a generous, dedicated healer and a brutal disciplinarian. After escaping to the U.S., Marlena stumbled from one disaster to another before finding forgiveness and reconciliation. Praised by award-winning writer and filmmaker Phil Cousineau as “an epic journey of reconciliation,” Nothing Bad Between Us offers an account of a vulnerable and honest struggle on the road to healing.

Sherry Richert Belul has spent the last thirty years practicing finding the gifts in everyday life. Using disappointment, depression, and anxiety as her teachers, Sherry has developed products and practices for appreciating the people in our lives and finding creative ways to love, appreciate, and help others. Sherry is author of Say it Now: 33 Creative Ways to Say I Love You to the Most Important People in Your Life and founder of Simply Celebrate.
