Marilyn Stablein joins us at 7 pm on Wednesday, September 25th, to read from her recently published travelogue on her journeys through India, Nepal, and Tibet, Houseboat on the Ganges: Letters from India & Nepal: 1966-1972, published by Chin Music. Stablein left her studies in Berkeley in 1966 as a teenager to live in the Far East, before the heft of the counter-culture’s spiritual land rush to India and at a time when — with few exceptions — most such accounts were written by the occasional male pilgrim. Through letters Stablein wrote to her family in California, which her mother lovingly saved, we also encounter the astonishing independence of a courageous young woman at the forefront of the spiritual revolution of the ’60s.

The book details the life, travels, and studies of a young artist immersed in Eastern spiritual and artistic traditions, before the internet, texting, and social media were ubiquitous, Stablein’s letters home paint a vivid picture of overland travels through India, Nepal, and Tibet, as well as an intimate portrayal of her journey from girlhood to adulthood in the East. Black and white photographs taken by Stablein further enhance this rich travelogue.

Marilyn Stablein is an award-winning poet, essayist, fiction writer, and artist. She is the author of thirteen books including: Splitting Hard Ground: Poems (which won the New Mexico Book Award); Bind, Alter, Fold: Artist Books; Sleeping in Caves: A Sixties Himalayan Memoir; a collection of eco-essays entitled Climate of Extremes: Landscape and Imagination; and, most recently, Vermin A Traveler’s Bestiary (Spuyten Duyvil Press). Her collages, assemblages and artist books are exhibited globally. Stablein lives in Portland and teaches the writing of memoir and poetry and the construction of artist books.
