Reimagine Resistance: Harper Glenn & Justina Ireland
November 5, 2022 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 amFree
Two novels that reveal truths about our time — about race and power, but also hope and love — through a reimagined past and a speculative future.
Harper Glenn‘s debut Monarch Rising finds us in a chilling near-future New United States of America, where Jo Monarch has grown up in the impoverished borderlands of New Georgia. She’s given one chance to change her fate… if she can survive a boy trained to break hearts. And Justina Ireland, the author of the visionary New York Times bestseller Dread Nation, returns in Rust in the Root with another spellbinding historical fantasy set at the crossroads of race and power in America. Moderated by Alicia Tate of Multnomah County Library.
Portland Book Festival General Admission Passes are required for entry into all events. Passes are $15 in advance and $25 day of Festival. Harper Glenn is an African American writer of fiction. In addition to creating works rooted in underrepresented spaces, they are passionate about books that unveil the psychological, sociological and economic disparities in poverty stricken regions of the world. Beyond creating narratives, they like vintage books, anatomy, opera, musicals, and old cemeteries. Though born and raised in Georgia, Harper resides in Washington State. Harper’s young adult speculative novel Monarch Rising is out from Scholastic Press.
Justina Ireland is the New York Times bestselling author of numerous books, including Dread Nation, Deathless Divide, and the Scott O’Dell Award winning middle-grade, Ophie’s Ghosts. Alicia Tate (they/them) is a librarian with Multnomah County Library, a member of the Portland Book Festival Advisory Board and a lifelong fan of YA fiction. Outside of their work as a librarian, Alicia enjoys starting art projects that rarely get completed, shopping at thrift stores, and listening to too much k-pop.
