Rocking Frog Cafe & NovaPDX present our Small Press Residency program starting this October. Every month, meet the people from local small press publishers involved in making great books. During the residency you can purchase the featured press’ books at Rocking Frog Cafe and meet the people behind them. This month our featured press is Perfect Day Publishing (www.perfectdaybooks.com).

Mohamed Asem

Mohamed Asem is the author of the memoir Stranger in the Pen (Perfect Day Publishing, 2018). His work has appeared in Oregon Humanities, Eunoia Review, the anthology What Lies Beneath (selected by Hilary Mantel and Bonnie Greer), and elsewhere. He has an MFA in creative writing from Kingston University London. Born in California, raised in Kuwait and Paris, he currently lives in Portland, OR.

Alissa Hattman

Alissa Hattman’s fiction has appeared in Gravel, Propeller, American Writers Review, Big Other, mojo, Shirley Magazine, and SUSAN, among other publications. In 2009, she received her MFA at Pacific University and, in 2013, she completed a MA in English Literature from Portland State University. She teaches writing full-time at Chemeketa Community College in Salem and facilitates writing workshops in Portland. For more information, visit www.alissahattman.com.

Jack Lewis

Jack Lewis was born and raised on the Lower East Side of NYC. He is a painter, podcaster, songwriter and former aspiring writer. He went to Bard College and studied art and writing with Amy Sillman, Nayland Blake, Elizabeth Murry, Mona Simpson and Richard Ford. After college he toured the world for ten years with his brother’s band Jeffrey Lewis and the Junkyard. He moved to Portland in 2006 and continues to make art and podcasts and sometimes songs and other stuff. He now makes a living substitute teaching social studies and other subjects for Portland Public Schools. He just released his 5th album on Don Giovanni records called Lvov In The Streets. Perfect Day Publishing is a small press based in Portland, Oregon, founded in 2011 by Michael Heald. Perfect Day has published 8 books of creative nonfiction, including one Lambda Award finalist and two Oregon Book Award finalists. The authors published by the press include Martha Grover, Mohamed Asem, sung, Lisa Wells, and Nick Jaina. Their motto is “if it’s not personal, we’re not interested.” Every week, the authors and people behind Perfect Day will share their work and engage in informal conversation with Michael Heald about their experiences and process.
