Social Justice Book Club (Remote)

August 15, 2020 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Free
Online, N/A, Portland, OR 97207

Join us Saturday August 15th at 2pm for our first Social Justice Book Club third Saturdays every other month. Books will focus on inequality and injustice including but not limited to race, gender, immigration, poverty, criminal justice issues in the U.S. and around the world. Nonfiction, novels, comics, and memoirs.

We will discuss How to Be An Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi.

About the book:

Antiracism is a transformative concept that reorients and reenergizes the conversation about racism—and, even more fundamentally, points us toward liberating new ways of thinking about ourselves and each other. At its core, racism is a powerful system that creates false hierarchies of human value; its warped logic extends beyond race, from the way we regard people of different ethnicities or skin colors to the way we treat people of different sexes, gender identities, and body types. Racism intersects with class and culture and geography and even changes the way we see and value ourselves. In How to Be an Antiracist, Kendi takes readers through a widening circle of antiracist ideas—from the most basic concepts to visionary possibilities—that will help readers see all forms of racism clearly, understand their poisonous consequences, and work to oppose them in our systems and in ourselves.

Due to the time and effort we put into organizing our book clubs if you choose to purchase the book elsewhere or check it out from the library we will now be asking members who do not purchase their books at our shop to pay a $5 fee. Thank you for understanding and supporting us.
