The first half of the evening includes participant shares, and if time allows, the second half includes opportunities to make your own art (haiku anyone?).

You will have the opportunity to meet your sex-positive comrades(we invite everyone to introduce themselves). One of the best parts of SUS is becoming part of a creative erotic community! You are also welcome to join with your camera off.

• Positive Regard: We offer only compliments and appreciation, not criticism or judgement. Don’t yuck anyone’s yum! Remember what Thumper’s mother said. Sharing your creativity, let alone your sexuality – is vulnerable af.

• The Gift of Presence: If your camera is ON, you are watching and being an audience member! ( If you need to step away, no problem, but please turn your camera OFF. It’s no fun to perform to an empty room).

• Confidentiality: We honor each other’s privacy – no screen shots or recordings of any kind. And while you may share your own experience, please don’t share identifying information. This agreement helps make for a safer space.

• Time Limit: Shares are limited to 6 minutes, unless more time has been negotiated in advance.

BACKGROUND

Stand Up Smut began in a tiny kava bar called Nalu in Portland Oregon in the spring of 2018. Finally – a place to share adult material that might not be appropriate for other venues! The invitation was for material of a sexual nature, an erotic flavor. That first month a crowd of 40-50 strangers squished into a space that comfortably seats a dozen, and by the end of the night, it had become a tradition. The shares were personal, hilarious, heart breaking, and sometimes super hot. (Kava is a beverage made from a root, that tastes like mud but settles the nervous system, and some say is an aphrodisiac). The event evolved over the past two years – we had musicians, and actors – scenes even! We added audience participation in the form of haikus. Every time we gathered was an incredible, amazing journey of intimacy.

Stand Up Smut is now online, and we have learned to build intimacy on zoom. We’ve discovered all sorts of new possibilities! We’ve had visitors from India, New Zealand, Canada, England – it’s been delightful to meet sex-positive comrades from all over the world. We have also started featuring visual artists who shared their art via screen share, which added a new kind of richness to the stew.

The invitation has always to show up with love and respect for one another as sovereign sexual beings, and that has continued even as we have gone digital.
