Wordlights Saturday poetry evenings presented by NovaPDX, Rocking Frog Cafe and hosted by Igor Brezhnev.

On Saturday December 14th, we’ll have a feature from Nastashia Minto, mini-features from Matan Gold & Maryam Gabriel-Imam, and a short set poetry open mic!

OUR FEATURE: Nastashia Minto

Nastashia Minto is an African American woman who was born in South Georgia and raised there by her grandparents. She grew up in poverty and around drugs, alcohol, and family violence. Her life experiences led her to obtain an associate’s degree in occupational therapy and a bachelor’s degree in psychology. She has been writing since she was nine years old and has found that her writing offers her another way to help people. Currently residing in Portland, Oregon her debut book of poetry was published February 28th 2019 by Eldredge Books. Nastashia has been a featured at many popular local reading series, including Unchaste Readers, Grief Rites, and Incite. Her writing has been published in SUSAN the journal, Unchaste Anthology, volume III and forthcoming in Portland Metrozine.

Matan Gold

Matan Gold is a writer from the San Fernando Valley. His work has been featured or is forthcoming in Apogee, Quarterly West, Waxwing, Track//Four, among others. Send him ramen recipes at www.matangold.com

Maryam Gabriel-Imam

Maryam Gabriel-Imam (pronouns they/she) is an Egyptian poet, scholar, singer-songwriter, translator, disabled performer, and tenderqueer caterpillar. They hold a masters in Middle Eastern Studies from the City University of New York, and they currently teach Decolonial History at Rosemary Anderson High in Portland, OR. They are also the up-and-coming bilingual drag performer and activist, Baba Yusef. Maryam or Baba is currently working on mixed-media poetry performances incorporating live music, drag and spoken word, breaking the boundaries of who gets to participate as expert or artist, focusing on home as a sense of absence within empire and land as space that speaks. Maryam is also working on their/her first and forthcoming chapbook, Pynk Volvo Blue Apocalypse (2020).

Sign-ups start at 5:30, show starts at 6PM. On second and fourth Saturdays each performer in the open mic gets 5 minutes, there are only 8 slots available and the list order is randomized.
