Making art is a vital way to survive. Sometimes we need a little help accessing our inspirations and motivations—working collectively has a powerful way of conjuring that.

Memory is a prominent part of our present lives. As we move through time our memories can come to us as if they are currently happening. Visions of imagined circumstances and what we hope for/ are afraid of make appearances in similar ways. I like to call these day-dreams. Have you heard of them? Ha. I day-dream a lot in various forms.

Opening up to our memories and imaginings helps us to cope with difficult times. Finding a way to express those experiences is a type of survival artists know quite well.

This workshop is intended for young artists aged 13-17. Grown enough to write, draw and understand storytelling and a good range to learn from one another as we move through this creating process. We will meet on Tuesdays and Fridays at 1PM for three weeks. Through these three weeks we will find our voices by cultivating day-dreams, explore various art-making processes, and ultimately create a zine, of which every artist will receive a digital copy.

This is new to all of us, even me.

I have worked with/made art with young humans for many years and each time is different. This is the first time I’ll have made a collective zine with inspiring young artists and I couldn’t be more excited about it. I believe every human is born an artist.

Katie Collins-Guinn is an artist, mother of blood and non-blood daughters, grandma, designer and writer, wifey, flower gardener, 4th generation North Portlander and lover of the beautiful. Her adult coloring book The Stoner Babes was published in 2018 with Microcosm Publishing.

Katie taught Art Therapy with Self Enhancement Inc. through their SUN program for over three years.

She’s spent time as a contributing freelance writer for the Portland Mercury and has been published in Entropy, Nailed Magazine and The Manifest-station. In 2015 Katie attended the very first Corporeal Writing workshop with Lidia, not knowing a soul in the room when she walked in, and knowing she’d finally met her artist family when she walked out. She makes art through any medium she can get her heart and hands on. Katie now oversees merchandise and other creative and logistical happenings at Corporeal Writing. She co-parents 21 roses and counting.
