The HOCUS submission period for an October 21st reading at Rose City Book Pub, with a central theme of "Spirits," is coming to a close. HOCUS is looking for prose and poems of up to 2,000 words related to hauntings, liquor, or states of mind! Submissions must be received by the end of today.
The Independent Publishing Resource Center (IPRC) in Portland, Oregon seeks a fourth Co-Leader to take on the role of Director of Archives & Library Programs in October 2022. This position reports to the Board of Directors, and joins three other Co-Directors, as well as a dedicated roster of volunteers and teaching artists. This is a full-time exempt position at 32 hours/week and $21/hr to start, with the opportunity to grow with the organization and participate in the creation of the FY 2023 Budget. The Gravity of the Thing accepts defamiliarized works in the following general categories: Short: Tell us a story in 3,000 words or less; we are interested in fiction, creative nonfiction, self-contained excerpts, and genre-bending forms. Through our residency program, Caldera supports artists, creatives, and cultural workers to build skills, relationships, and projects that inspire growth, combat oppression, and activate change. Residents draw inspiration from the residency community and the natural world surrounding our Arts Center in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains. Residencies are open to regional and national, creatives and cultural workers in any discipline. Artists at any stage of their careers, who are not current students, are eligible to apply. Residencies are also available for parent artists who would like to bring their children. Residents will receive private lodging, studio, and artist stipend. The forests of the Oregon Coast Range are part of a vast ecosystem spanning from Northern California to the Tongass National Forest in Alaska. The Pacific temperate rainforest is, acre for acre, better than the Amazon Rainforest at absorbing and storing carbon. If left to grow, the majestic cedars, spruces, hemlocks, and firs can hold carbon for an astonishing 800 years or more. These forests are climate forests. As we work toward stabilizing the climate, there is no technology that can sequester carbon at the scale of maturing and ancient forests. Yet less than 10% of Oregon’s old-growth forest remains. Throughout the Oregon Coast Range, the patchwork scars of ongoing industrial clearcuts and wide-scale liquidation of ancient forests are visible reminders of our limited imaginations…
