ERASURE WORKSHOP w/ Zachary Schomburg

This 3 hour session will introduce you to the poetic form of Erasure, which is the practice of erasing words from an existing text to generate new poetry / visual art. Together, we’ll look at published examples of erasure, and discuss what might make our own erasures successful. Before we meet, I’ll assign a brief reading which will we use to center our discussion. I’ll also provide materials for erasure, including books, random prose texts, white-out, scissors, glue, markers, etc. If you already have a text you’d like to erase, please feel free to bring it along. Heather Christle in Conversation With Zachary Schomburg

Heather Christle has just lost a dear friend to suicide and now must reckon with her own depression and the birth of her first child. As she faces her grief and impending parenthood, she decides to research the act of crying: what it is and why people do it, even if they rarely talk about it. Honest, intelligent, rapturous, and surprising, Christle’s investigations look through a mosaic of science, history, and her own lived experience to find new ways of understanding life, loss, and mental illness. The Crying Book (Catapult) is a deeply personal tribute to the fascinating strangeness of tears and the unexpected resilience of joy. Christle will be joined in conversation by Zachary Schomburg, Octopus Books publisher and author of Pulver Maar. [You…

HOW TO DRAW A GHOST w/ Zachary Schomburg

HOW TO DRAW A GHOST Led by Zachary Schomburg First, we’ll talk about how to draw a ghost while looking at a wide range of ghost illustrations. Then we’ll draw ghosts. How do we see ghosts when we draw them? What makes a ghost and what makes a ghost drawing? What kind of ghosts will we be, and how will we be drawn? We’ll take turns reading writing about ghosts as we draw them. And we won’t stop until we’ve drawn the right ghost for us. Secondly, we’ll do some poem writing for/about ghosts. We’ll talk about how ghosts can properly haunt a short piece of writing. By the end of the workshop, we’ll each have new drawing of ghosts, and a ghost poem. $25…

Poets Dobby Gibson & Zachary Schomburg

The poems in Dobby Gibson’s new book transform the everyday into the revelatory. Little Glass Planet (Graywolf) exults in the strangeness of the known and unknowable world. In poems set as far afield as Mumbai and Marfa, Texas, Gibson maps disparate landscapes, both terrestrial and subliminal, to reveal the drama of the quotidian. Elegiac, funny, and candid, Little Glass Planet is a kind of manual for paying attention to a world that is increasingly engineered to distract us from our own humanity. In Zachary Schomburg’s own words, Pulver Maar (Black Ocean) “is a collection of poems written between 2014 and 2018. Some of the poems are long, and some of them are short.” These are every bit the poems you’ve come to dream of, long…
