Oregon Book Award Fiction Finalists at Springfield Public Library

Join the five 2021 Oregon Book Award finalists for the Ken Kesey Award for a reading as part of Springfield Celebrates Authors.

Chelsea Bieker is from California’s Central Valley. She is the recipient of a Rona Jaffe Writer’s Foundation Award and her fiction and essays have been published in GrantaMcSweeney’sCatapult magazine, Electric Literature, and Joyland, among others. She has been awarded a MacDowell Colony fellowship, and holds an MFA in creative writing from Portland State University. Godshot is her first novel.

Originally from Alabama, Genevieve Hudson earned an MFA from Portland State University and has received Fulbright, MacDowell, and Vermont Studio Center fellowships. She is the author of Pretend We Live Here: Stories, and lives in Portland, Oregon. Boys of Alabama is her debut novel.

Mark Savage is an author and musician from Portsmouth, England. He lives in Portland, where he is a bookseller and co-host of the Mind-Meld. Fictional Film Club is his first novel.

Vanessa Veselka is the author of the novel Zazen, which won the PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize, and The Great Offshore Grounds. Her short stories have appeared in Tin House and ZYZZYVA, and her nonfiction in GQThe AtlanticSmithsonianThe Atavist, and was included in Best American Essays and the anthology Bitchfest: Ten Years of Cultural Criticism. She has been, at various times, a teenage runaway, a sex worker, a union organizer, an independent record label owner, a train hopper, a waitress, and a mother. She lives in Portland, OR. Her latest novel, The Great Offshore Grounds, was long-listed for the National Book Award.

Lidia Yuknavitch is the nationally bestselling author of the novels The Book of JoanThe Small Backs of ChildrenDora: A Headcase, the memoir The Chronology of Water (currently being adapted for film by director Kristen Stewart) and The Misfit’s Manifesto, based on her TED talk “On the Beauty of Being a Misfit,” which has been viewed over 3.5 million times. Her most recent book is the story collection Verge. She is the recipient of two Oregon Book Awards and a Willamette Writers Award, and has been a finalist for the Brooklyn Public Library Literary Prize and the PEN Center Creative Nonfiction Award. She is the founder of the literary innovation laboratory Corporeal Writing. She lives in Portland, Oregon.
