A Writer in the World: An Online Prose Workshop (& more) with Sara Jaffe

June 24, 2020 @ 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm

$200 – $400
Online, N/A, Portland, OR 97207

Registration deadline: June 15, 2020

As an instructor of creative writing for over a decade, I often find graduating students coming to me with a similar list of questions: How do I continue my writing practice outside of an academic setting? How do I become part of a writing community? How can I publish my work? Taken together, these concerns add up to one big, burning question: How do I figure out how to be a writer in the world?

In this 7-week online class—part workshop, part forum, part resource-sharing assembly—we’ll touch on some of the key components of this admittedly huge question. We’ll practice strategies for generating work without hard deadlines, gain tools for revision, and explore both the broad map and the nooks and crannies of the contemporary writing landscape. Potential topics include: submitting to journals, investigating independent presses, and hooking into community- and identity-based writing organizations. (Note: This is not a How to Get Published course—commercial concerns will be part of the conversation, but will not be our guiding force.) The class will include a one-on-one consultation with the professor about one of your pieces of writing.

This class is specifically intended for writers looking to bridge their practice from an institutional setting to a less structured environment, though I’d be happy to hear from interested applicants who don’t meet this exact criteria. Writers in all genres are welcome, though my primary knowledge and experience is in prose. My pedagogy is grounded in a commitment to anti-racist and inclusive teaching practices.
