Eminent Oregonians: Abigail Scott Duniway, Richard Neuberger, Jesse Applegate

FreeBased largely on primary sources, authors Jane Kirkpatrick, Steven Forrester, and R. Gregory Nokes present compelling, three-dimensional views of the adventurous, consequential, and sometimes heart-breaking lives of three notable individuals in their new book, Eminent Oregonians. Renowned author Jane Kirkpatrick shares the life of suffragist Abigail Scott Duniway, a lecturer, organizer, writer, and editor who devoted over forty years to the cause of women’s rights. Oregon columnist and publisher Steven Forrester presents Richard Neuberger, whose election to the U.S. Senate changed Oregon and national politics. Acclaimed journalist R. Gregory Nokes shares the live of abolitionist Jesse Applegate, who is most remembered for his leadership role in establishing the Applegate Trail. According to Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nicholas Kristoff, Eminent Oregonians is “an inspiring and moving account of three people who helped create modern Oregon.”
Jane Kirkpatrick is a former Oregon rancher, licensed Clinical Social Worker, and author of 40 fiction and nonfiction largely based on the lives of historical women. Her works have been short-listed for the Oregon Book Award, The Spur Award from Western Writers of America, and have won the WILLA Literary Award, the National Carol Award, the Will Rogers Gold Medallion, and the prestigious Wrangler Award from the Western Heritage and National Cowboy Museum. She speaks around the world about the power of story in our lives. She makes her home with her husband, Jerry, and their Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Caesar, in Bend, Oregon. R. Gregory Nokes is an author focusing on Oregon and western history. His books include Massacred for Gold: The Chinese in Hells Canyon; Breaking Chains: Slavery on Trial in the Oregon Territory; and The Troubled Life of Peter Burnett: Oregon Pioneer and First Governor of California. Prior to pursuing his interest in western history, Nokes was a journalist with twenty-five years experience with The Associated Press, where his assignments included foreign correspondent and diplomatic correspondent, and fifteen years with the Oregonian in Portland. A native of Oregon, Nokes received his undergraduate degree from Willamette University and attended Harvard University as a Nieman Fellow. He and his wife, Candise, make their home in West Linn.
Steven Forrester saw the inside of the U.S. Senate in the fall of 1963 as a page. He was one of the five principals who founded Willamette Week. Following ten years as a Washington correspondent, he became editor and publisher of The Daily Astorian. In retirement from daily journalism, he returned to his research on Richard Neuberger and pursued publishing Eminent Oregonians. He is president and CEO of his family’s company, EO Media Group. Forrester’s next work will be a full biography of Richard Neuberger.
