Endi Bogue Hartigan & Flávia Rocha in Conversation

Join us in celebration of the launch of oh orchid o’clock (Omnidawn Publishing, 2023) by Endi Bogue Hartigan who will introduce her new collection. She will be joined by Brazilian poet Flávia Rocha, who will read from her most recent book Exosfera. Enjoy an evening of lyric investigations into space, time, our time, and orchids, followed by a short discussion and Q&A.

This collection speaks the language of the clock as a living instrument, exposing the sensory impacts of our obsession with time. In oh orchid o’clock, lyrics wind through histories like a nervous system through a body. The poems speak to how we let our days become over-clocked, over-transactional, and over-weaponed. With an instrumental sensibility, Endi Bogue Hartigan investigates what it is to be close to time—collective time, with its alarms and brutalities, and bodily time, intricate and familial. She considers how can we be both captured and complicit within systems of measurement, and she invites us to imagine how to break from, create, or become immune to them. Her poems use language to expose the face of the clock to reveal how gears press against interconnecting systems—economic, capitalist, astronomical, medical, governmental, and fantastical. Endi Bogue Hartigan is a Portland poet whose new third full-length poetry book oh orchid o’clock, was just released from Omnidawn Publishing. Her previous books and chapbooks include: the seaweed sd treble clef (Oxeye Press 2021), a handmade chapbook featuring a series of poems and photographs; the full-length book Pool [5 choruses] (Omnidawn, 2014) which was selected by Cole Swensen for the 2014 Open Poetry Book Prize; the collaborative chapbook out of the flowering ribs (EBH and Linda Hutchins, 2012); and the collection One Sun Storm (Center for Literary Publishing, 2008), which won the Colorado Prize for Poetry.

Flávia Rocha is a Brazilian writer and journalist, author of four books of poems published in Brazil. The latest, Exosfera (Editora Nós, 2021), is also available in Portugal. She has an M.F.A. in Writing from Columbia University, and for 13 years was the editor-in-chief of Rattapallax, a literary magazine based out of New York City. In the area of film, she is the founder of Academia Internacional de Cinema (aicinema.com.br), a film school located in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and is the co-writer of the feature film Birds of Neptune (U.S. 2016), by Steven Richter, and of two other feature projects set to be produced in 2023. She was living in Lisbon, Portugal, for the past two years and is now back in the Pacific Northwest, where she has lived for more than 10 years.
