For Colored Folks
August 15, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
FreeWHAT IT IS: A book club geared to cultivating joy and empowerment for people of color. The book lists will include non-fiction written by POCs and some fiction as well. Donations are not required to attend, but if you’d like to donate to contribute to snacks and beverages that we bring feel free to Cash app me at $BriaunaMcKizzie or venmo me at brigirl
ABOUT THE SPACE: The meetings will be held at my job, Ruby Receptionists, which is located on the 9th floor of the Fox Tower. Free parking on the street after 7:00 PM. It’s also located like 5-7 minutes from the max. Carpooling would be great, too. I live on the west side and would be happy to have other West siders ride with me.
*UPDATE: The meeting on April 11th will be held at 1337 SE MLK Blvd!!! Don’t go to Fox Tower!*
Gender neutral bathrooms.
IMPORTANT ITEMS IN HOPES OF BEING INCLUSIVE:
1. Even if you don’t like reading, or reading physical books isn’t the best learning style for you. I’m planning to write simplified summaries of what we read/will discuss so that you can still enjoy the group.
2. The group is lead by a Black femme and it’s inspired by my desire to cultivate the joy of other Black femmes and empower them (and if someone is interested in leading with me please let me know!) However, ALL are welcome but please be aware of your privilege and the space you take up when your contributing to the discussion.
3. Books are expensive. For each book, I’m willing to buy 2 copies for people who request assistance (I will randomly pick someone using some type of software).
4. Some of these books have heavy topics so I will be using trigger and content warnings — and some of things in the books won’t be discussed as a group because I care about ya’ll’s mental health.
Finally, I’m open to feedback! So if you have suggestions for books to add to the list or how to have the most successful group possible, let me at those suggestions. Also, if not all the books interest you or are the best for you to read at this time — just come to the meetings that would best feed your spirit.
