Jolabokaflod: Books for NYE 2018!
December 30, 2018 @ 3:30 pm - 6:30 pm
FreeBringing the Icelandic celebration of “Yule Book Flood” to Portland for the first time!
Jolabokaflod is a national holiday tradition in Iceland where people exchange books as gifts on Christmas Eve then spend all night hiding away and reading them over mugs of hot chocolate (spiked or not!).
We want to bring this tradition to Portland, but for New Year’s Eve, so come on down to meet indie authors and buy books, hear Nordic music and fairy tales from talented performers, and sample other Scandinavian traditions at Nordia House. Then relax and enjoy a safe, snug, *hygge* New Year’s Eve at home, cuddled up with a book. Ahhh…a perfect way to start 2019!
Book Fair Schedule:
4:00 PM – Amy Hakanson, musical performance
Amy has studied in Sweden with some of the best folk musicians in Scandinavia. She is trained in classical violin and grew up immersed in American roots music, playing bluegrass fiddle with her family band. She performs both solo and with various groups around the Pacific Northwest and has recently started a Scandinavia-folk-fusion project called Varelse.

5:00 PM – Sarah Gilbert, fairytale storytelling
Sarah is a writer of essays & poetry, mother of three, and a passionate bicyclist. She has honed her knowledge of an array of topics that speak to the art, culture, and social groups in the greater Portland area! She is excited to delve into Iceland fairytales for this event.
