Kris Gowen
February 27, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
FreeWe welcome L. Kris Gowen to the store on Wednesday, February 27th, at 7 pm to read from her memoir One Nation Under Song: My Karaoke Journey Through Grief, Joy, and America.
Kris Gowen had a successful career, a wonderful partner, a strong circle of friends … and then tragedy struck. Faced with the death of her best friend, she turned to something that brought her joy: karaoke. With a half-formed plan and a need to sing, she took off on a 17,774-mile karaoke road trip through America, singing in bars, American Legions, and Eagles Lodges, experiencing the country with people who sometimes had nothing more in common than a love of cheesy ’80s tunes. Along the way, she reconnected with old friends, made new ones — and healed.
Kris Gowen, PhD, EdM, received her doctorate in Child and Adolescent Development from Stanford University and her Master of Education from Harvard Graduate School of Education. She is also the author of Sexual Decisions: The Ultimate Teen Guide, a book for youth. She lives in Portland — despite her dislike of gray skies. Her favorite artists to karaoke are Donna Summer and Olivia Newton-John.
