Many Roads to Here
October 25, 2020 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm
FreeThe stories of immigrants and their journeys to the U.S. over countless miles from myriad countries will be streaming on a local radio station under a new collaboration. The Immigrant Story, a Portland based nonprofit, and Portland Radio Project have partnered on the podcast, “Many Roads to Here,” in which immigrants tell, in their own words, their passage to America.
Produced by a group of coast-to-coast volunteers, Many Roads to Here utilizes the power of storytelling as immigrants share their hopes, resilience, courage and love. Each episode features one immigrant’s story.
Since 2017, The Immigrant Story’s mission was simple: share the stories of immigrants, refugees, asylum seekers, and Dreamers to foster empathy and build a more inclusive community. After three years of reporting and disseminating immigrants’ accounts, volunteers at the storytelling nonprofit had an idea to help further their mission: take audio from interviews conducted for The Immigrant Story and create a podcast series to amplify their voices.
“Especially today, with the way immigrants are often disparaged, we are helping tell a different story – about the extraordinary accomplishments and nuanced challenges of our immigrant friends and neighbors,’’ said PRP co-founder Rebecca Webb. “We see the podcast as part of the movement toward a more just and equitable media landscape in Portland and beyond.”
“These stories needed to be shared, to showcase what our country is made of, who we are and what makes us great,’’ said Sankar Raman, founder of the Immigrant Story.
Beginning October 25, the podcasts will be broadcast locally at 99.1 FM, and will stream worldwide on Sundays at 4:00 p.m. Pacific Time. Shortly after broadcast, episodes will be available on demand at The Immigrant Story, PRP Podcast Co-op, and from all your favorite streaming services including Apple Podcast, Spotify and Stitcher.
PRP is a low-power radio (LPFM) and streaming station highlighting local musicians, nonprofits and small businesses. For more, visit the PRP mission, format and services.
