We are thrilled to welcome Marcy Cottrell Houle and Dr. Elizabeth Eckstrom to Broadway Books on Wednesday, February 6th, at 7pm to read from their book The Gift of Caring: Saving Our Parents – and Ourselves – from the Perils of Modern Healthcare, newly published in a revised paperback edition.

The book, winner of the 2016 National Christopher Award “for books that affirm the highest values of the human spirit,” combines memoir and practical strategies to shed new light on aging by showing it from twin perspectives: the story of a daughter desperately seeking help for the parents she loves and of a geriatrician who offers life-changing strategies that can protect our loved ones – and ourselves.
Marcy Cottrell Houle is a biologist and award-winning writer. Her book Wings for My Flight won the Christopher Award, and The Prairie Keepers was a New York Times Notable Book for Earth Day. She has also been published in The New York Times, Reader’s Digest, and Nature Conservancy Magazine and has been featured on NPR and national television programs.

Dr. Elizabeth Eckstrom is chief of geriatrics in the Division of General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics at Oregon Health Sciences University and cofounder of the OHSU Healthy Aging Alliance. She is a sought-after national speaker and author of numerous publications.

Both authors live in Portland. When they read at Broadway Books after the publication of the hardcover edition of the book the audience was standing-room-only! We’re excited to hear about the new, revised, edition.
