Start Where You Are

Course Description: This workshop will explore concepts of chance and choice by starting where you are and using everyday materials and tools in new and unexpected ways. We will combine collections of recycled things like old mail, magazines, packaging materials, and other ephemera with material and marks made by hand. Experimenting with different ways to layer color and create texture through drawing and painting on paper or various substrates that can be cut, cropped, rotated and reassembled in different variations.

Materials List:

Below is a list of basic materials and tools that will be needed in class. This materials list was based on many art supplies that can be assembled from supplies already on hand, but reach out to hquinn@iprc.org before 4/19 if you need to inquire about checking out any materials from the IPRC.

• Different types of paper (suggested size 8 x 10 or larger as well as mixed media paper or paper intended for wet media)

• Scissors and/ or x-acto blade

• Glue

• Pencil and various writing utensils (pens, crayons, colored pencils)

• Ruler (optional but helpful for people who prefer precise, straight line work)

• Paint and/or ink (water based of any kind or quality – think about your preference)

• A water cup

• Brushes (a variety of sizes suggested)

• Palette (this can also be a piece of cardboard)

• Cutting matt (optional – this can also be cardboard)

• Rag or paper towels for wiping brushes (also helpful for spills just in case)

• Tools you think would be good for scraping (plastic pieces, squeegees, nails, flat-head screw drivers, cardboard, old credit cards, zip-ties, endless possibilities here)

Instructor Bio: Elizabeth Arzani is an artist and art educator from Charlotte, NC. She earned her BFA in Painting, Art Education and Art History degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and is a current MFA Visual Studies candidate at Pacific Northwest College of Art. As a collector of sorts, her work is rooted in storytelling, utilizing found objects as memory markers. Elizabeth has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions internationally as well as nationally, from Seattle, WA and Portland, OR to Charlotte, NC and Rock Hill, SC. Outside of her studio practice, Elizabeth has been teaching for the past eight years in various capacities in Charlotte, NC, Seattle, WA and abroad in Luxembourg City, Luxembourg.
