An international coming of age story in a world where borders are collapsing and Ethiopian children beg pennies from eco-tourists to use at internet cafés to FB their cousins in Las Vegas. Tracking the coming of age of brothers and sisters, friends and cousins across the cultural divide, and set in Ethiopia, Chicago, Dubai, and China through twenty years of the most rapid development Africa has ever known, The Adoption is contemporary and international, tracking the lives of kids growing up today in tomorrow’s world.

Writer? Composer? Actor? Performance Artist? Social Change Artist? David Schein is hard to pin down. He attended the Undergraduate Writer’s Workshop at the University of Iowa where he lived next door to Ted Berrigan (neither of them ever went to class). He cofounded Berkeley’s The Blake Street Hawkeyes, won Hollywood Dramalog and Bay Area Critic’s Circle Awards for Playwriting and Musical Composition for his opera TOKENS: A PLAY ON THE PLAGUE, which he produced in the Bay Area at the height of the AIDS epidemic. He wrote for and performed with Whoopi Goldberg and is the author of various plays, poems, songs musicals and sound-pieces He lived in Tjuana with Guillermo Gomez Pena, wrote cartoon development for Hannah-Barbera, and directed Chicago’s Free Street Theater where he facilitated jobs programs for teens in writing and theater in Chicago Schools and Parks. He cofounded the One Love HIV/AIDS Awareness Theater in Hawassa Ethiopia with the children of Debub Nigat Circus and served as Executive Director of the Arts Council for Chautauqua County(NY). His ascendence to the pantheon of unclassifiable Literati was secured when he worked as the Classified Advertising Manager at the NY Review of Books and one day stood in front of a urinal next to Václav Havel.
