The Voice of Empathy: Jennifer Richter and Emmett Wheatfall – reading and Q&A

The series showcases poets whose work investigates the human capacity for compassion and generosity and invites the reader/listener to care deeply for others and the world. This description is for the poets’ reference only and does not presume to impose any constraints on the work selected for presentation.

Jennifer Richter’s two poetry collections have both been named Oregon Book Award Finalists: her second book, No Acute Distress, was chosen by Major Jackson; her first, Threshold, by former U.S. Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky. Richter has been awarded an Oregon Literary Fellowship as well as a Wallace Stegner Fellowship and Jones Lectureship in Poetry by Stanford University, where she taught in the Creative Writing Program for four years. During those years, Richter led a poetry workshop for recovering substance abusers at the Delancey Street Foundation in San Francisco, and has been working with at-risk populations ever since, most recently at Oak Creek Youth Correctional Facility in Albany. She lives in Corvallis with her husband, the novelist Keith Scribner, and teaches in Oregon State University’s MFA program.
Emmett Wheatfall is a published poet, playwright and recording artist. Emmett has published 7 books of poetry, written a play titled Under the Red Robin, released one recorded poetry CD and four lyrical poetry CDs. In May 2018, Fernwood Press, an imprint of Barclay Press published Emmett’s 7th poetry collection titled Our Scarlet Blue Wounds. Emmett is known nationally and internationally for his multifaceted poetics. He is one the pacific northwest’s premier African American poet’s.
