Everyone has a story to tell. Each person’s life is filled with adventure, mystery, trouble, and triumph. Memoir is a powerful way to demonstrate the interconnectedness of all human beings. Documenting the story of your life encourages compassion and empathy and reminds the reader that others have also experienced some of what they had to endure. Writing memoir is also a powerful way to record family history and can be a precious gift that your children and grandchildren will treasure.
We will discuss issues pertaining to memoir including the importance of detailed descriptive writing, the role of the imagination, the ethics of telling stories about real people, the elements of narrative storytelling, and story structure.
Students will receive at least three potential writing prompts per week. The majority of the class time will consist of reading and discussing the results of the previous week’s writing exercises.
Although there is no required text for the class, this quarter I will read an excerpt from Nicole Chung’s memoir All You Can Ever Know (New York: Catapult, 2018) at the beginning of each class as a source of inspiration for our weekly prompts.
Clark College’s downtown campus is located at 500 Broadway Street, Suite 200 Vancouver, WA 98660. Metered parking is available for $.50 per hour.
