Wordlights Saturday poetry evenings presented by NovaPDX, Rocking Frog Cafe and hosted by Igor Brezhnev.

On Saturday January 11th, we’ll have a feature from Brianna Grisby, mini-features from Julia Gaskill & Stephen Meads, and a short set poetry open mic!

OUR FEATURE: Brianna Grisby

Brianna Grisby is a spoken word poet born and raised in Portland Oregon. She was the 2018 grand slam champion. She has been on the Portland unified slams team twice and will be representing Portland Poetry Slam at the 2020 Women of the World Poetry Slam in Dallas Texas. She loves using her voice to advocate for others, and to help people feel valid.

MINI-FEATURES FROM:

Julia Gaskill

Julia Gaskill (she/her) is a professional daydreamer hailing from Portland, Oregon. She has competed multiple times on national stages with her poetry across the country. Her work has been featured on Nailed Magazine, FreezeRay Poetry, Ink&Nebula, Rising Phoenix Review, Knight’s Library Magazine, Voicemail Poems, and more. Her poem ‘I Will Not Beg For Scraps’ was nominated for Best of the Net in 2015. Julia is the author of four chapbooks, runs the mic Slamlandia, co-founded the Bigfoot Regional Poetry Slam in 2019, and just released her debut spoken word album, Stouthearted Bitch (available at juliagaskill.bandcamp.com). It goes without saying that she loves Muppets more than you. Find Julia at @geekgirlgrownup or facebook.com/jgaskpoetry

Stephen Meads

Stephen Meads, originally a Bay-based poet, has been living and performing in Portland for over six years. He has featured at slams all across the country – from Portland, Maine to Honolulu, Hawaii. Stephen stormed IWPS in 2013, 2014, 2017, and has competed in NPS five times with various teams. He has been featured on Drunk in a Midnight Choir, Slam Find, Write About Now, and Button Poetry, and he occasionally contributes to the website Nailed. Stephen eats a lot of pizza, is the champion of pro-wrestling factoids, and hates writing poet bios. More information about Stephen can be found at facebook.com/whoisthespirit.

***

Sign-ups start at 5:30, show starts at 6PM. On second and fourth Saturdays each performer in the open mic gets 5 minutes, there are only 8 slots available and the list order is randomized.

Come share your words and join us for a night of open mic, great poetry features and get nourishment & libations from Rocking Frog Cafe (home of the best donuts)! 🙂
