Words & Wine: An Evening with the Napa Valley Writers’ Conference

Join us for an evening of readings by once and future faculty and alumni from the Napa Valley Writers’ Conference, while enjoying small bites and a no-host bar featuring local vintages. The event will be held at the Southeast Wine Collective, a community urban winery, restaurant, and wine bar serving handcrafted food, curated wine flights, and wines by the glass from producers in Portland, the nearby Willamette Valley, and afar. Faculty readers include: Lan Samatha Chang, author of three books, including the critically acclaimed novella All Is Forgotten, Nothing Is Lost and the novel Inheritance, Mitchell S. Jackson, Major Jackson, and Ada Limón; NVWC alumni Blas Falconer, Van Khanna, Nichole Perkins, and Marci Vogel.

Join us at #AWP19 for an evening of readings by once and future faculty and alumni from the Napa Valley Writers’ Conference, while enjoying small bites. A no-host bar featuring local vintages will be open for attendees to purchase wine and other beverages.

The event will be held at the Southeast Wine Collective, a community urban winery, restaurant, and wine bar serving handcrafted food, curated wine flights and wines by the glass from producers in Portland, the nearby Willamette Valley, and afar.

Faculty readers include:

Lan Samatha Chang, author of three books: the critically acclaimed novella All Is Forgotten, Nothing Is Lost; the novel Inheritance, winner of a PEN/Open Book Award; and Hunger: A Novella and Stories. Chang directs the Iowa Writers Workshop.

Mitchell S. Jackson, author of the new memoir Survival Math and the novel The Residue Years, which won the Ernest Gaines Prize for Literary Excellence. He teaches at New York University and Columbia University.

The partial list of alumni readers:

Blas Falconer, author of four poetry collections, most recently Forgive the Body This Failure. He is also a co-editor for The Other Latin@: Writing Against a Singular Identity and Mentor & Muse: Essays from Poets to Poets. He teaches in the MFA program at San Diego State University.

Vandana Khanna, author of two full length poetry collections — Train to Agra and Afternoon Masala — and a chapbook. Her poems have won the Elinor Benedict Poetry Prize and received five Pushcart Prize nominations, among other honors. She serves as the co-poetry editor of the Los Angeles Review.

Nichole Perkins, whose first collection of poetry — Lilith, But Dark — was published in 2018. She is a 2017 BuzzFeed Emerging Writers Fellow and a 2016 Callaloo Creative Writing Fellow for poetry. She co-hosts Thirst Aid Kit, a BuzzFeed podcast about pop culture and desire.

Marci Vogel, author of the novella Death and Other Holidays, winner of the inaugural Miami Book Fair/de Groot Prize, and the poetry collection At the Border of Wilshire & Nobody. She serves as a Postdoctoral Scholar Teaching Fellow at the University of Southern California.
