It’s zine making time! Dive into all things zine with Outlet and zine queen Kate Bingaman-Burt!

In this IN PERSON(!) workshop we’ll explore zine history, types of zines, talk about where to find zines, how to share them, and experiment with different zine formats (including the versatile and ubiquitous one page zine)—also we’ll spend some time actually sort of DEFINING what a zine is for those who are new to this amazing medium for sharing ideas and knowledge! Kate will give tons of prompts, tips, and inspiration to take those ideas and turn them into a tangible lovely THING.

This class culminates in making a collaborative zine that is riso printed and mailed to you!

Supplies Needed

  • You don’t need to bring a thing except yourself! We provide a slew of making tools, pens, paper, collage materials, watercolors and more!

  • Optional: you’re welcome to bring your favorite darker mark making tools (colors closer to black, dark blue, red, and green work best with the riso—try to stay away from yellows and other light colors).

  • This workshop is totally analog so no digital tools/laptops/ipads are necessary (working with your hands and getting messy is part of the fun!)

Skill Level

  • Open to any level of zinester—from I’ve-never-even-heard-of-a-zine to I-have-my-own-personal-zine-library!

  • Prerequisite: this class uses risograph printing for the final product, so some riso experience is highly recommended. If you haven’t taken our Riso Basics workshop that’s a great place to start!

Workshop Fee & Ticketing

Our in person workshops are $50 to $75+ (sliding scale). This includes the workshop, all supplies, your printed zine page, some downloads for future use, and a copy of the printed, assembled, and bound collaborative zine to take home!

The ticket price is donation so please input your price at check out. Your ticket fee helps keep our small print business afloat. We can’t thank you enough for supporting us!!

Covid Safety Protocols

We will be requiring masks and vaccinations for this workshop. We’ll be relying on an honor system for vaccinations (not checking cards at the door), but please please don’t attend if you are not fully vaccinated. There will be 10 attendees total, plus Kate and Leland. We’ll be taking precautions by opening our space (weather permitting, we’ve got a big garage door that looks out on a nice courtyard!), sanitizing surfaces, and maintaining as much distance as we can.

We also know that things with COVID-19 have a way of changing rapidly—we’re monitoring the situation and will let you know immediately if we decide this workshop needs to be cancelled or rescheduled.

Can’t wait to see you in person! This will be the first time we’ve hosted this zine making workshop IRL and we are so excited!

Outlet is a risograph print shop, community maker space, and the studio of Kate Bingaman-Burt. We host workshops, pop-up events, and other projects and offer an array of services from printing, button making, binding, and more! We’re also the home of a zine library and tons of art supplies, making tools, and collage materials. When not socially distancing we also rent our space and offer in-person open hours when folks can print, make buttons, and hang out. Outlet is based out of Portland, Oregon and was founded in 2017.

This workshop is lead by illustrator and educator Kate Bingaman-Burt and Outlet’s studio manager Leland Vaughan.

Kate mostly draws, letters, documents, and collects, but she also does a lot of other things that involve energy, conversation, and exchange. As a critical component of her creative practice, Kate is a full-time educator and makes illustrations for all sorts of clients all around the world. She is an Professor of Graphic Design at Portland State University. Kate owns Outlet which hosts workshops, pop-up events and a risograph print studio. She also sits on the board of Design Portland and has been scheming with them since 2012.
