What begins as a simple, distracted conversation between husband and wife, Glenn and Wendy Ganges—him reading a library book and her working on her computer—becomes an exploration of being and the passage of time. As they head to bed, Wendy exhausted by a fussy editor and Glenn energized by his reading and no small amount of caffeine, the story begins to fracture. The River at Night flashes back, first to satirize the dot-com boom of the late 1990s and then to examine the camaraderie of playing first-person shooter video games with work colleagues. Huizenga shifts focus to suggest ways to fall…

THE SLEEP GAS release party and art exhibit with Chris Cilla

Floating World Comics 1223 Lloyd Center, Portland, OR, United States

Chris Cajero Cilla is the author of the 2010 cult classic graphic novel, The Heavy Hand, and this new book from FU Press is a collection of the artist’s short stories created over the past decade-plus. Cilla’s absurdist humor takes center stage in this bouillabaisse of pieces that recalls the work of contemporary masters such as Matthew Thurber and Michael Deforge, as well as the unfettered id that permeates the great underground comix of the 1960s and 1970s. Cilla co-mingles a variety of styles and genres in the service of surrealist gems such as “Burp’s Law,” “Exqueezmeat,” and “Labyrinthectomy,” all of which will buoy you with a blissfully dull buzz, long after you’ve put it down. WHO: Chris Cilla WHAT: The Sleep Gas release party and…
