Foul Play Nordic Style: Scandinavian Crime Fiction

Join us for an eight-week workshop focusing on Nordic crime films and novels. Tom Birnie, instructor in Scandinavian Studies at Portland State University, is back to lead this one-of-a-kind course, in which we will learn about, discuss and savor several films and books from the northernmost reaches of Europe. Nordic crime novels and films have attained an extraordinary international presence over the past three decades. Frequently addressing social issues, these allied genres investigate the troubling shadows lurking in what may at first glance be a perfect set of Scandinavian welfare states, where nothing can go wrong. Old Pal is open for submissions until April 30th, 2022! We publish poetry, fiction, critical non-fiction, audio, mixed-media, and various mediums of art. We encourage artists from all experience levels and communities to submit. Simultaneous submissions welcome, but please let us know if your submission is accepted elsewhere. Multiple genre submissions are also welcome (e.g., if you’d like to submit a combination of poems and art, or poems and a fiction piece, etc.). Contributors will be compensated upon publication. Documentary Screening: The Bookstour

In 2019, Mason took a road trip around the country to 50 independent bookstores in 50 days. His goal was to promote his self-published novel, 2084, but his conversations with booksellers shifted his focus. On a second trip, he brought a cameraman along and asked booksellers a simple question: why should we shop indie? The resultant documentary, “The Bookstour”, premiered on public television this spring. Mason works on his books--and bookish films--in Los Angeles. Screening at 8:00, panel discussion at 8:30.

Event starts at 5:30 All ages welcome. Free parking is available in the lot across the street until full. A creative writing workshop, open mic, and film screening community event at The Abbey. Poets and writers will engage in a 1-hour cross-genre / poetry writing workshop in conversation with the themes, subjects, and ideas of the selected film. A 45-minute community open mic will follow, inviting attendees to share new creative work and build literary community with each other. A free admission community film screening will conclude the event, encouraging donations and concession stand purchases beforehand.
