Marilynne Eichinger

Powell's City of Books 1005 W Burnside Street, Portland, OR, United States

Marilynne Eichinger’s Over the Peanut Fence (Marilynne Eichinger) asks one question: Is eliminating youth homelessness a hopeless endeavor? The search for an answer began when Eichinger and her partner invited a 20-year-old street youth into their home. The book tells the story of Zach and the trauma he experienced as a result of childhood abuse and neglect. Raised in poverty, he was the fifth of nine children in a family plagued by drugs and alcohol. Zach was a survivor and eventually clawed his way from hopelessness to a future filled with possibilities. Part storybook, part memoir, and part analytic study, Eichinger’s book shows what is and what will be when society is moved to action.

Revolutionary Love: A Political Manifesto to Heal and Transform the World

Powell's City of Books 1005 W Burnside Street, Portland, OR, United States

From social theorist and psychotherapist Michael Lerner comes a strategy for a new socialism built on love, kindness, and compassion. Revolutionary Love (University of California) proposes a method to replace what Lerner terms the “capitalist globalization of selfishness” with a globalization of generosity, prophetic empathy, and environmental sanity. Lerner details how a civilization infused with love could put an end to global poverty, homelessness, and hunger, while democratizing the economy, shifting to a 28-hour work week, and saving the life-support system of Earth.
