Spring 2020: Filling the Well

Online N/A, Portland, OR, United States

Meets online via Zoom. A generative class for beginning and experienced writers who want to be writing but feel stuck on an ongoing project or are fresh out of ideas. The class will explore tools that get the voices flowing (like Anne Lamott’s Shitty First Drafts and opening/beginning strategies from James Scott Bell’s Plot and Structure), alongside fun and challenging prompts that serve as jolts to the imagination to get you writing. At the end of the course, students will have the opportunity to turn one of the exercises they worked on in class into a short piece and receive feedback from the instructor.  This class meets online via Zoom and registered participants will receive information on how to access the meeting a week before the class starts. Summer 2020: Mastering Revision

Online N/A, Portland, OR, United States

Revision is one of the most challenging parts of the writing process. How do we dig deeper and color in the edges to make our writing more evocative? How do we use the senses to make it come to life? What would happen if we approached the same material from a different point of view (third person as opposed to first-person say)? In this six-week class, we will take an editor’s perspective on polishing our work. The class will be structured as a mini-workshop and we will devote most of our time to peer reading and critique with an emphasis on elements of developmental editing as well as line editing. We will focus on refinement of style, structure, and content. Sentence-by-sentence, paragraph-by-paragraph, we will sharpen…

Revision: Taking a Second Look

Online N/A, Portland, OR, United States

Most authors know that real writing begins with rewriting. Yet, revision is one of the most challenging parts of the writing process. How do we dig deeper and color in the edges to make our writing more evocative? How do we use the senses to make it come to life? What would happen if we approached the same material from the perspective of a different character? Or from an entirely different point of view (third person as opposed to first-person say)? In this six-week class, we will take an editor’s perspective on polishing our work and that of others. The class will be structured as a mini-workshop and we will devote most of our time to peer reading and critique with an emphasis on elements…

Writing About Sex

Online N/A, Portland, OR, United States

From kissing to seduction—to the deed itself—writing about sex can be one of the hardest feats in storytelling. We’ll study the way writers like Lidia Yuknavitch, Melissa Febos, Zadie Smith, D. H. Lawrence, and others approach this facet of craft. Our conversations will explore how sex can be implied or explicit, while still being literary and classy. Class one is entirely devoted to writing the literary kiss, and future sessions will cover sex “implied” with its absence on the page, homosexual sex, and heterosexual sex. We’ll cover the do’s and don’t’s, address common “cliches,” and inspect different ways writers represent sex in their stories, so that we can better assess what might work best for ours. Each writer will have the opportunity to share a…
