Verselandia! East Side Slam

Literary Arts’ Youth Programs presents the first annual Verselandia! East Side Slam. Cheer on high school students in your community as they perform original poetry in front of a panel of judges. Students from participating East Multnomah County high schools will be competing at this event. Following the same rules as national poetry slams, students must perform original work without props, costumes, or music in front of a panel of judges and a live audience. Using a scale of one to ten, the judges will rate both the performance and the writing of each student. Please note that high school students may use adult language and explore adult themes. See this The Mouths of Others talk by Diana Kirk, author of Licking Flames: Tales of a Half-Assed Hussy, and a contributor to Nasty!, a collection of bold essays and recollections. Hear the Astoria-based writer and business owner read some of her latest provocative and genre-busting work on Wednesday, May 29, from Noon – 1 p.m. in the Visual Arts Theatre. When she’s not writing, Kirk owns and operates a bar in Astoria and travels as much as possible. Gabriel Urza

The Mouths of Others welcomes author Gabriel Urza. Gabriel Urza received his MFA from the Ohio State University. His family is from the Basque region of Spain where he lived for several years. He is a grant recipient from the Kellogg Institute for International Studies and his short fiction and essays have been published in Riverteeth, Hobart, Erlea, The Kenyon Review, West Branch, Slate and other publications. He also has a degree in law from the University of Notre Dame and has spent several years as a public defender in Reno, Nevada.

Claudia Castro Luna

The Mouths of Others is proud to welcome Claudia Castro Luna. Claudia Castro Luna is Washington State Poet Laureate. She served as Seattle’s Civic Poet, from 2015-2017 and is the author of the Pushcart nominated Killing Marías (Two Sylvias Press) also shortlisted for WA State 2018 Book Award in poetry for This City, (Floating Bridge Press). She is also the creator of the acclaimed Seattle Poetic Grid.
