Jolabokaflod PDX 2019

Our second annual celebration of Jolabokaflod, the Icelandic Yule Book Flood, is on December 28th! While Icelanders celebrate on Christmas Eve, Portland will be celebrating between Christmas and New Year's, to add an event the whole family can enjoy during the holidays. More than 25 local indie authors will be at Nordic NW with their books. There will be folk music acts, a book donation drive, and fantastic Nordic-themed folk art in the pop-up shop. Please come out to support your local authors and learn a little about the Jolabokaflod spirit! Nansen of the North is the story of Fridtjof Nansen (1861-1930), a Norwegian explorer, scientist, diplomat, and humanitarian. Nansen's story caught the imagination of Portland Story Theater co-founder and creator of the Armchair Adventurer series, Lawrence Howard. For the first time, Lawrence is telling an epic tale of the Arctic. A captivating performer, Howard holds audiences spellbound and has been called “the Homer of Portland” and “the master of nonfiction on the stage.” Nansen of the North is the seventh installment of his highly successful Armchair Adventurer series. Join us for an eight-week workshop focusing on Nordic crime films and novels. Tom Birnie, instructor in Scandinavian Studies at Portland State University, is back to lead this one-of-a-kind course, in which we will learn about, discuss and savor several films and books from the northernmost reaches of Europe. Nordic crime novels and films have attained an extraordinary international presence over the past three decades. Frequently addressing social issues, these allied genres investigate the troubling shadows lurking in what may at first glance be a perfect set of Scandinavian welfare states, where nothing can go wrong. Through examinations of corruption, exploitation, inequity and crooked politics, the reader/viewer is treated to superb studies of human character.
