Defenders of the Faith: The Heavy Metal Photography of Peter Beste

The religious ferocity of heavy metal fandom is one of the most fervent in the history of subculture. The display of this fervor has been channeled and distilled throughout time into one sacred object: the battle vest. Often referred to as the Kutten (German for monk’s robe), the battle vest serves a multitude of purposes: as a musical CV, a badge of authenticity, a creative practice of identity, and a fashion statement. Photographer Peter Beste’s Defenders of the Faith (Sacred Bones) documents the timeless and universal concept of fandom through the elevation of the battle vest.

Diana Lo Mei Hing was born in Hong Kong and spent her childhood in Guangzhou during the volatile run up to the Cultural Revolution. Her father fled with his family to Milan, Italy where Diana was raised. A well known abstract watercolor and mixed media painter, photographer, and poet in Italy, where she continues to exhibit, Diana moved to Portland with her American husband, also a fine arts photographer, in 2015. McKinney opens Shelter in Place in the windows and first floor gallery of Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education on the eve of the Jewish holiday of Sukkot, October 1, 2020. Shelter in Place, which in its entirety is viewable from the sidewalk surrounding the museum, is a film, photography, and dance-based interrogation of the social tenets of Sukkot—departing and dwelling, expressing and atoning, striking and shaking.
