Submission Deadline: PLAYA Residency

The Internet 001 SE Cyberspace Lane, Portland, OR, United States

Application window closing on August 15th for the Jan – June 2020 residency period. Two-week, three-week, and four-week sessions available. Each beginning on a Monday and ending on a Friday. Open to a wide range of disciplinary practitioners, from the sciences to creative arts. Residents must be comfortable living in a remote setting. $35 non-refundable application fee, $150 security deposit. For writing applications: 10 pages of fiction, nonfiction, or poetry, 10 – 15 pages for play writing or screenplays, and a cover letter. See their website for more details and tips for applying.

Tin House Workshop recognizes that the ongoing pandemic makes traveling and timelines more difficult than ever. The KBOO Community Radio Artist In Residence Program assists artists working creatively with sound. Every year, one artist or one collaborative group of artists will be awarded twenty hours of studio recording*** and production time with a KBOO Mixologist in order to create a piece of sound art that will be publicly presented at the end of the Residency. ***Due to COVID19, studio recording time may be limited or not available. Applications are now open for our 2022 Summer Residencies. Running May through August, each residency comes with a $1200 stipend and an apartment in Portland.⁠ ⁠ In the hopes of accommodating a wide variety of schedules, Residents may stay for any length of time within the dates of their awarded residency, meaning you can stay for a weekend or a month (and still receive the same stipend).⁠ ⁠ The deadline to apply is 11/21, with application fee waivers available.

Through our residency program, Caldera supports artists, creatives, and cultural workers to build skills, relationships, and projects that inspire growth, combat oppression, and activate change. Residents draw inspiration from the residency community and the natural world surrounding our Arts Center in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains. The forests of the Oregon Coast Range are part of a vast ecosystem spanning from Northern California to the Tongass National Forest in Alaska. The Pacific temperate rainforest is, acre for acre, better than the Amazon Rainforest at absorbing and storing carbon. If left to grow, the majestic cedars, spruces, hemlocks, and firs can hold carbon for an astonishing 800 years or more. These forests are climate forests. As we work toward stabilizing the climate, there is no technology that can sequester carbon at the scale of maturing and ancient forests. Yet less than 10% of Oregon’s old-growth forest remains. Throughout the Oregon Coast Range, the patchwork scars of ongoing industrial clearcuts and wide-scale liquidation of ancient forests are visible reminders of our limited imaginations…
