“Comics in the Classroom” Workshops at PSU

Portland State University - Branford P. Millar Library 1875 SW Park Avenue, Portland, OR, United States

This one-day conference, designed for teachers and librarians, will focus on how to use graphic novels in educational settings. Topics will include practical tips for incorporating comics in existing curricula, approaches for different age/grade levels, and teaching about the mechanics of sequential art. Participants will get takeaways such as example lesson plans with discussion guides, classroom and homework activities, handouts, assessments, project ideas, and rubrics. The Artist Relief Program is administered by the Oregon Arts Commission, in partnership with Oregon Community Foundation and the James F. and Marion L. Miller Foundation. The Artist Relief Program provides relief funding to Oregon artists who have experienced financial hardship during the COVID-19 pandemic due to cancellations of exhibitions, performances, rehearsals or other activities with a stipend, events, teaching opportunities, book signings, or other professional presentation opportunities. The program supports professional artists who have experienced or anticipate experiencing loss of revenue of $1,000 or more between March 1 and December 31, 2020. Awards range from $1,000 to $5,000. Artists from underserved communities, including (but not limited to) rural communities and communities of color, as well as artists with disabilities, are especially encouraged to apply. The Trauma-Informed Creative Writing Classroom

The creative writing classroom is not an explicitly healing space—yet writers regularly bring their stories of trauma into workshops. What are our obligations to these students as instructors? What are the best practices for managing workshop discussions about potentially triggering material?
