Hear the Astoria-based writer and business owner read some of her latest provocative and genre-busting work on Wednesday, May 29, from Noon – 1 p.m. in the Visual Arts Theatre. When she’s not writing, Kirk owns and operates a bar in Astoria and travels as much as possible. The Mouths of Others presents author Liz Prato. Prato is the author of Volcanoes, Palm Trees & Privilege: Essays on Hawaii. Her essays combine lyricism, research and humor to explore the colonization of Hawaii and her role as a white tourist in a land that has been formed and destroyed by white outsiders. She discusses Hawaiian history, pop culture and contemporary affairs. Her work has been listed as a Notable selection in Best American Essays and Best American Sports Writing, and has been widely published in dozens of literary journals and magazines. Gabriel Urza

The Mouths of Others welcomes author Gabriel Urza. Gabriel Urza received his MFA from the Ohio State University. His family is from the Basque region of Spain where he lived for several years. He is a grant recipient from the Kellogg Institute for International Studies and his short fiction and essays have been published in Riverteeth, Hobart, Erlea, The Kenyon Review, West Branch, Slate and other publications. He also has a degree in law from the University of Notre Dame and has spent several years as a public defender in Reno, Nevada.

Claudia Castro Luna

The Mouths of Others is proud to welcome Claudia Castro Luna. Claudia Castro Luna is Washington State Poet Laureate. She served as Seattle’s Civic Poet, from 2015-2017 and is the author of the Pushcart nominated Killing Marías (Two Sylvias Press) also shortlisted for WA State 2018 Book Award in poetry for This City, (Floating Bridge Press). She is also the creator of the acclaimed Seattle Poetic Grid.
