The People's Poets is hosted every 3rd Saturday. We have been a huge success so far and we want to continue that energy this month! We call ourselves "The People's Poets" because our goal is to amplify voices of color while providing a safe place for displaced communities in Portland. While we welcome and encourage everyone to attend and support, we exclusively reserve the open mic as a platform for writers of color. 2$ suggested donation. Light refreshments provided. No Man Can Hinder Me takes you on a journey from slavery, emancipation to "freedom" through storytelling & the meanings of eight songs. This production educates you on why they sung these songs and their underground codes & meanings. Prior to the production there will be a pre-show, showcasing some of Portland's Awesome! In February, two Black women organizers were unexpectedly laid off in an attempt to quietly dissolve the radical organizing collective, The Woodlawn MIC. Located in the heart of NE Portland’s historically Black, and heavily gentrified Woodlawn neighborhood, The Woodlawn MIC is the city’s only space dedicated to the preservation of local, progressive, Black- and Brown-led community organizations. Since 2017, The MIC has been returning space, place, power, and resources directly to BIPOC communities and organizers, by circumventing structural accessibility gaps that limit our ability to organize ourselves, create our own solutions, and build within our own communities.
