The class meets for four (4) Saturdays 11/16 – 12/14 no class on 11/30 Designed as an intro for the beginner or as a brush-up for the seasoned writer, this course focuses heavily on tools that will spark ideas on both what to write and how to write.  Writer's block will never again be an excuse as numerous prompts and brainstorming exercises get introduced to keep the ideas flowing.  Each writer will end this course with a minimum of two, ten-minute plays.  They will also walk out with a notebook of exercises for future reference.  No preparation is required.  All material will be developed and written in class.  Bringing an electronic device that can connect to the internet will be helpful so as to access online…

We have the great privilege of hosting Rayhané Sanders, literary agent at Massie and McQuilkin, for a limited amount of twenty-minute 1-on-1 consultations spread across three days, November 15-17. (Yes, Rayhané represents our own Lidia Yuknavitch.) In these personal meetings, she will give you feedback from an agent’s point of view on the first 30 pages of your manuscript. (A note: Ms. Sanders comes from New York publishing, and is very encouraging but also direct!) The deadline for submitting your 30 pages will be November 1st. Learn Make Share: Bindfast Training

In this Learn Make Share, folks will be guided through the steps to bind a book using our Bindfast machine. Everyone will have a chance to practice using the paper stack cutter to prepare pages and bind 2-3 books. ** This LMS is part of a monthly series of trainings for the Bindfast. In this 4-hour introductory course, participants will learn the basics of risograph (riso) printing and will leave with an understanding of how to use this print technology to create zines, fliers, posters, or other printed matter. While this technology is not new, riso printing has recently become one of the most exciting developments in independent printing and publishing because of its cost-effectiveness for print runs between 25 and 1,000. Workshop participants will learn how to best maximize the many quirks of riso printing to achieve striking results. Participants are also encouraged to bring files of artwork that they’d like to print (files should be 100% grayscale, letter or tabloid size). Write to Publish is an annual publishing conference hosted by Portland State University’s graduate program in Book Publishing. It is the largest fundraising event for both the program and the student-run general trade publisher, Ooligan Press. This event serves as an open house for people interested in the publishing program, while also being a great networking event for local publishers and writers. Winter Poetry Festival

Portland’s second Winter Poetry Festival is a joyful gathering of poets and poetry lovers. Winter is a magical time where the beauty of language burns brightly in the darkness.
