Comics and Zines for Middle Schoolers

9am-12pm (Breakfast and snacks provided) What better place to learn about comics and zines than the region’s largest Zine Library? Using the library as inspiration, youth will have workshops in character development, layout, lettering, inking & coloring, and risograph printing. Intro to Letterpress: Two Day Workshop

Day 1: Typesetting Essentials Day 2: Printing Essentials Learn to set moveable type and print on table top and poster presses in the IPRC print shop. You’ll learn the vocabulary of printing and typesetting while getting a feel for this beautiful and historic process. Gain access to IPRCs collection of over 150 fonts of lead and wood type. Leave the class with a printed card and the satisfaction that comes with using 100 year old equipment! Portland Correspondence Co-op

PDXCC is a monthly gathering where participants make and share analog correspondence in the great mail art tradition of Ray Johnson and Anna Banana: art and conversation through the mail. This uniquely democratic, DIY art form incorporates writing, drawing, collage, rubber stamps, faux postage, decorative tape, typewriters – anything goes, as long as it goes through the mail. Hang out, skill share and send the glorious results through the mail. Monthly events hosted by the Portland chapter of the Correspondence Co-op and Niko Courtelis. Basic materials will be on hand (scissors, glue sticks, envelopes’85), but you’re encouraged to bring whatever materials fuel your creative spirit. Intro to Hand-Drawn Animation: Two Day Workshop This workshop is a quick-start guide for artists that want to learn how to move their art in time.  Participants will learn basic animation principals, traditional hand-drawn 2D animation techniques and  tips for creating an affordable home animation studio.  During this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to create 2 small animation projects. This workshop will be taught by Lori Damiano.  Lori D has an MFA in Experimental Animation from CalArts and currently teaches in the Animated Arts program at the Pacific Northwest College of Art. The second annual Steamroller Printing Spectacular, hosted jointly by PPA + IPRC, will engage a huge audience with the magic of printing and give local artists a chance to create on a massive scale while connecting with a supportive community. Intro to Risograph Printing

In this 4-hour introductory course, participants will learn the basics of risograph (riso) printing and will leave with an understanding of how to use this print technology to create zines, fliers, posters, or other printed matter. While this technology is not new, riso printing has recently become one of the most exciting developments in independent printing and publishing because of its cost-effectiveness for print runs between 25 and 1,000. Workshop participants will learn how to best maximize the many quirks of riso printing to achieve striking results. Participants are also encouraged to bring files of artwork that they’d like to print (files should be 100% grayscale, letter or tabloid size). Intro to Screenprinting

Join us to learn about silkscreen printing! Learn how to create stencils, prep and process screens while gaining knowledge about tools, tips, and tricks for the photo emulsion process. You’ll have the chance to acquire best practices for setting up your print station, printing and registration while gaining practice with the medium.
