Today, author Stephanie Campisi joins us to read from her new picture book, Five Sisters (Familius), illustrated by Madalina Andronic. When a great white oak gifts an old man a branch imbued with magic, he carves five wooden dolls “each smaller than the last.” The wooden dolls take on a life of their own as they frolic from one season to the next bringing the old man and his wife a joy they had always longed for. Beautiful verse and stunning, traditional illustrations full of woodland creatures and playfully painted matryoshka dolls explore a tale of heartache, hope, and love. Today, author and illustrator Skylaar Amann joins us to read from her new picture book, Lloyd Finds His Whalesong (Page Street Kids). Lloyd can't sing. The rhythm of the whalesong guides the whales through danger and connects them to each other. But Lloyd is too quiet to join in. If he can't sing, how can he be a part of the pod? Then one day he finds a magical, mysterious object with supersonic seaweed strings! This could be his chance to be part of the song. He practices and practices, nervously preparing to show the other whales. But before he can perform for them, a disruptive, noisy boat approaches and scatters the pod. Join Front Porch Sessions in helping to make less strangers in the world! These events are about listening and sharing with an open heart. Three storytellers will share a personal story around a chosen theme. Audience members will also have an opportunity to share and form deeper connections with each other by discussing a specific question after each story has finished. The social unrest in our country isn’t anything new. It has been there along. We don’t have nearly enough spaces where the black voice can be highlighted, uninterrupted and not be dismissed or discounted. With heightened tension on social media and digital platforms we can become desensitized to the injustices that have plagued the black folks in our community for years. Unfortunately, there are still too many people in our community who are unwilling to take off their personal lens of life, so they gain clarity from another perspective. Our hope is that people walk away with a growth in empathy and understanding from a black person's point of view. This is why we are creating a space... to listen, to learn and take action.…

Author Blair Thornburgh and illustrator Kate Berube join us to present their new picture book, Second Banana (Abrams). The kids in Mrs. Millet's class are putting on their annual nutrition pageant. Every kid plays a food. Every kid gets a line. It is a big deal. But this year, there aren't quite enough parts for everybody. So the class is cast: Fish, Cheese, Broccoli, Blueberry, Banana, and… Second Banana. Second Banana feels rotten. She wants to be the ONLY banana! In their deliciously original school story, Thornburgh and Berube recognize the dreadful disappointment that a casting list can cause — as well as the power of friendship, creative thinking, and a good attitude to turn a rotten situation into one that's quite ap-peel-ing.
